5th Shanghai Intellectual Property Forum

On October 26 - 27, Shanghai will be the venue of a first-class conference co-organized by the MIPLC, Stanford Law School, the Chinese State Intellectual Property Organization (SIPO), the Tongji University of Shanghai and the Shanghai Intellectual Property Agency (SIPA).

The conference will highlight the social, political and economic conditions under which intellectual property rights are exercised and enforced in Asia's emerging economies. The themes include retrospective views on industrialization in Asia's developed markets of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, followed by an examination of the present IP situation in the emerging economic giants, China and India, and their future prospects.  Discussions in the conference will also center on how far the impact of the cultural and economic diversity of South East Asia goes in influencing the protection of IP. A number of prominent officials from international organizations such as the WTO and the WIPO will participate as well as heads of national IP offices and leaders of worldwide known innovative companies. Contributors will be, inter alia, Mr. Jon W. Dudas, President of the USPTO and Dr. Jürgen Schade, president of the German Patent and Trademark Office, both of whom will deliver the opening addresses. The keynote speech will be given by SIPO Commissioner Tian Lipu. At the occasion of this important event, Professor Straus and the Director General of the Chinese Intellectual Property Training Center (CIPTC), Mr. Ma Fang, are planning to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for deepened academic exchange and the dispatch of Chinese students to the MIPLC. The initiators of the project, Professor Paul Goldstein and Professor Joseph Straus, expect an outstanding conference which will bring together important players in the IP field from all over Europe, the U.S. and Asia.
