FAQs MIPLC Admission Requirements
What are the formal minimum requirements for applying for admission to the LL.M. program?
All applicants to our LL.M. program must have at least:
- A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in law, economics, business administration, natural sciences, engineering, IT, literature, or media sciences (240 ECTS credits);
- One year of relevant professional experience;
- Very good knowledge of the English language.
Please refer to the other FAQ for detailed explanations. Thank you.
Do I have to know German (or any other language) to study at the MIPLC?
No, you don’t. The program is taught completely in English. All professors and administrative staff speak English. On the other hand, you will not get extra points in the evaluation of your application for your language skills.
How many ECTS credits do I need to bring to the MIPLC?
To start your studies at the MIPLC, you must have gained at least 240 ECTS credits (generally equivalent to a four-year Bachelor’s degree). At the MIPLC, you will gain 60 ECTS credits, amounting to a total of 300 ECTS credits, which is the minimum required for the Master’s level.
If you have fewer than 240 ECTS credits, e.g. because you only have a three-year Bachelor degree, we can recognize additional credits you have gained from professional experience. You can earn a maximum of 60 ECTS credits that way. However, you must then have at least two years of professional experience: one year for the extra credits, and another year to satisfy the professional-experience requirement.
I have earned IP credits on a different study program. Can I transfer those credits?
Please contact us for more details.
Why do you require one year of professional experience?
Our LL.M. program is a “program of further study” (“weiterbildender Studiengang” in German). Under German law, such programs, which are clearly designed for professionals, are open only to applicants with at least one year of professional experience. It is thus a legal requirement.
Why do I need two years of professional experience if I only have a three-year Bachelor’s degree?
If you have fewer than 240 ECTS credits, e.g. because you only have a three-year Bachelor degree, we can recognize additional credits you have gained from professional experience. You can earn a maximum of 60 ECTS credits that way. However, you must then have at least two years of professional experience: one year for the extra credits, and another year to satisfy the professional-experience requirement.
What does "relevant" professional experience mean?
"Relevant" means that your experience should either be related to intellectual property, or to the subject of the qualifying degree. This means, for example, experience as an engineer if your qualifying degree is in engineering, experience in law if your qualifying degree is in law, and so on.
Apart from actual employment in a paid position, we can also accept as professional experience any of the following:
- internships,
- work as a research assistant, and
- the German "Referendariat".
Do I have to take the TOEFL test to apply at MIPLC?
As our program is taught exclusively in English, all students must have a very high level of active and passive knowledge of English. We therefore require all applicants to submit score report sheets for a TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge CPE not older than three years.
The acceptable minimum scores are as follows:
- TOEFL - 100 points (internet-based), 250 points (computer-based), 600 points (paper-based);
- IELTS - 7.0;
- CPE - "C".
